    청춘 (靑春 Youth)       -詩/ 사무엘 울만( Samuel Ullman)

   Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind;
     ㅡ청춘(靑春)이란 인생의 어떤 시기가 아니라, 마음가짐을 뜻한다.
     it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees;
     ㅡ장미빛 볼, 붉은 입술, 부드러운 손발이 아니라,

    it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of

    the emotions;
     ㅡ강인한 의지(意志), 풍부한 상상력(想像力), 불타오르는 정열(情熱)을 가리킨다.
     it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
     ㅡ청춘이란 생명(生命)의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는 싱싱함이다.

 

 

●Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of

    the appetite, 
     ㅡ청춘이란 두려움을 물리치는 용기(勇氣),
     for adventure over the love of ease.
     ㅡ안이한 마음을 뿌리치는 모험심(冒險心)을 의미한다.
    This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.
     ㅡ때로는 20세 청년보다 60세 노인(老人)이 더 청춘일 수 있다.

 

 

●Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
     ㅡ나이를 더해가는 것만으로 사람은 늙지 않는다.
     We grow old by deserting our ideals.
     ㅡ이상(理想)을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙는다.
     Years may wrinkle the skin,
     ㅡ세월은 피부에 주름살을 늘게 하지만
     but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
     ㅡ열정(熱情)을 잃으면 영혼(靈魂)이 시든다.
     Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart
     ㅡ근심, 두려움, 자신감 상실은 마음을 죽이고
     and turns the spirit back to dust.
     ㅡ정신을 타락시킨다.

  Whether sixty or sixteen,
     ㅡ그대가 60세든 16세든
     there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder,
     ㅡ인간의 가슴속에는 경이(驚異)로움에 대한 동경심,
     the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next,
     ㅡ어린아이처럼 미지(未知)에 대한 끝없는 탐구심,
     and the joy of the game of living.
     ㅡ살아가는 것에 대한 즐거움이 있다.

 

 

●In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;
     ㅡ그대에게도 나에게도 마음 한가운데는 무선(無線) 방송국이 있는데,
     so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage
     ㅡ인간과 신(神)으로부터 아름다움과 희망(希望), 기쁨과 용기, 
     and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.
     ㅡ그리고 힘의 영감을 받는 한 그대는 젊다.

 

 

●When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows

    of cynicism
     ㅡ영감이 끊어지고, 정신이 싸늘한 냉소주의(冷笑主義)의 눈(雪)과
     and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty,
     ㅡ비관주의(悲觀主義)의 얼음으로 덮일 때 그대가 20세라도 늙는다.
     but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism,
     ㅡ그러나 머리를 높이 치켜들고 희망(希望)의 물결을 붙잡는 한
     there is hope you may die young at eighty. 

     ㅡ80세라도 인간은 청춘(靑春)이다.
